Description:

Schools help promote the mental health and well-being of students through education, prevention, and early intervention efforts. They provide an opportunity to reach many youth with strategies that can improve their health and resilience. This interactive eight-session Community of Practice (CoP) will provide school-based health center staff with resources and approaches that can be used in school settings to build safe and affirming environments, provide mental health support, train staff, promote wellness, reduce stigma, enhance collaboration with community organizations, promote positive peer relationships, and more. Optional 30-minute office hours follow each session for more support.

Behavioral health professionals may earn one continuing education credit for attending each CoP session.

Objectives:

At the end of this CoP, participants will be able to:

  • Articulate challenges and opportunities to building safe, affirming environments and providing mental health support in a school-based setting
  • Identify evidence-based practices, interventions, and emerging concepts in school-based health
  • Identify strategies for building strong linkages to services, engaging parents, promoting positive peer relationships and enrollment in health insurance
  • Develop a plan that supports transfer of knowledge and practice enhancement
